Earth Day[Apr 22, 2008]
When American senator Gaylord Nelson came up with idea on April 22, 1970, to point out to the authorities that the Planet Earth is in danger and when he called about 22 millions of Americans to show that, the first protest for environmental protection was organized and it leaded to creation of the modern environmental movement. That was just the beginning. As time was passing this movement’s influence became bigger, so the Earth Day 30 years later was celebrated in 184 countries, by 5000 groups for environmental protection, with participation of couple of hundreds of millions of people world wide. The additional reason for celebrating the Earth Day is that the General Assembly of United Nations proclaimed the year of 2008 as The International Year of Planet Earth, and that we are in the UN’s Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014).
