Report on Rome conference

[May 21, 2007]

In Rome from the 21st to the 24th of May 2007 the World Bank and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs organized a conference entitled “Youth in Europe and Central Asia – From Policy to Action”. The conference gathered about 400 participants from over 20 European and Asian countries that included representatives from international organizations and governments. During the opening ceremony a speech was given by the Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi.

The Youth Voices Group and Serbia, besides a few other participants, was represented by Duško Krsmanović.

At the conference the topic discussed was the problems youths faced, especially in transitional countries. The Italian Prime Minister made special notice of the position of youth in the Balkans and talked about the need for support in Serbia’s European integration. The conference had as its goal the creation of a unique platform for Europe and Central Asia so that the national governments, as well as the World Bank and other international organizations, could better adjust and prepare solutions for youth related problems, among which the most serious are employment, education and health care.
